Tackle Your Herb Garden Like A Pro The Marian Way

One of my favorite springtime outings is to stop into the local garden center or nursery and take in the splendor of the herb section. A kitchen herb garden adds beauty to your home while adding amazing fragrance and color both indoors and out. Potted herbs add beauty to an outside patio, a vegetable garden or even a kitchen windowsill, depending on the amount of space you have. Herbs are easy to grow in various conditions. They do best in full sun, but you can find varieties that can tolerate a few hours of shade. There are many herbs to choose from so be sure to pick your favorites that you will use often and add an additional new herb to try.

For best results, interplant herbs with vegetables, fruits, or flowers. Herb plants offer benefits to your garden that can attract pollinators, repel pests, and provide ground covers. Companion herbs are rosemary, parsley, basil, thyme, and mint. Mint grows best in separate pots and then placed in the ground if desired because mint spreads easily and can get out of control quickly. Herbs add lots of flavors that will enhance your food and beverages into culinary delights. Try fresh herbs in salads, scrambled eggs, marinades, cocktails, and even desserts.

The Marian Way tip for storing fresh herbs: The mason jar is perfect to store your fresh-picked or grocery store-bought basil, parsley, and cilantro. In a large mason jar add a few inches of water. Place the branches of herbs with the leaves attached to the stem, cut side down, in the mason jar, making sure the stems are not packed or squashed inside. Add a tight-fitting lid. Store the jar in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. With just a little work and love, growing your own herbs will not only save you money at the grocery store, but it will bring you joy, delight, and beauty to your home.
